From Investigation to Restoration: Our Unique Three-Step Approach to Forensic Engineering

When disaster strikes, whether it's a fire or flood, the aftermath can be overwhelming. Forensic engineering plays a crucial role in investigating incidents, determining the origin and cause, and helping insurers and property owners move forward with clarity and confidence.

At SMS Forensic Engineering, we offer a distinct, engineering-first approach to forensic investigations, one that integrates 60 years of consulting expertise with over 20 years of forensic experience. Our team includes licensed Forensic Engineers, subject matter experts (SMEs), and building design professionals who are deeply familiar with current codes, standards, and investigative methodologies.

Unlike other firms, SMS Forensic Engineering can engage at any stage, or all three stages of the forensic process, offering clients a true one-stop solution.

Step 1: First on Scene Investigation

Our process typically begins with a claim initiated by the insured. The insurer or loss adjuster then engages a forensic investigator, at SMS Forensics, this is always a highly trained Forensic Engineer.

As the first on scene, our Forensic Engineer:

  • Investigates the origin and cause of the incident (e.g., fire, flood, explosion, or equipment failure)

  • Collects evidence through photographs, site inspection, and interviews

  • Reviews relevant documentation such as drawings, maintenance logs, and user manuals

  • Recommends next steps, such as joint examinations or expert testing

Following the site visit, we provide a Preliminary Forensic Report. If no further action is required, this serves as the Final Report. If additional investigation is necessary, we proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: Detailed Investigation and Joint Examinations

When deeper analysis is required, subject matter experts (SMEs) are brought in to examine specific systems, components, or equipment. If multiple stakeholders are involved, a joint examination is coordinated, often with legal or insurance representatives notifying interested parties of potential liability.

SMS Forensics provides expertise in:

  • Electrical systems: faults, fires, lightning strikes, and power quality issues

  • Mechanical systems: piping, HVAC, gas, and plumbing-related failures

  • Fire protection systems

  • Vehicle systems

  • Equipment and appliance failures

During joint examinations:

  • Components are examined non-destructively or destructively, depending on evidence needs

  • All parties collect and document findings using diagrams, sketches, photos, and schematics

  • Exemplars may be used to illustrate deviations or expected performance

  • Advanced imaging (e.g., CT scan, X-ray) may be employed to preserve internal evidence

A key differentiator of our approach: the same Forensic Engineer who conducts the initial site investigation may also serve as the SME, ensuring continuity and preserving firsthand knowledge throughout the process.

The resulting Detailed Forensic Report is prepared for insurers, legal teams, or courts. SMS Forensic Engineers are certified to act as expert witnesses, offering testimony in litigation where required.

Step 3: Reporting and Restoration Support

Our involvement doesn’t end with an investigation. SMS Forensics supports insurers, contractors, and building owners through every stage of restoration with three tailored services:

3A: Damage Evaluation & Recommendations

Our engineers visually assess the impacted areas and define the scope of damage and required repairs. This includes recommended tests, certifications, and repair methods. A Scope of Work Report is provided to support efficient restoration by contractors.

3B: Engineering Design for Complex Losses

When significant damage occurs such as structural compromise or total loss, we develop detailed engineering drawings to guide reconstruction. These designs incorporate current codes and standards, ensuring compliance and long-term integrity.

3C: Contract Administration & Site Review

Our experienced contract administrators conduct site reviews to monitor compliance with the scope and engineering drawings. This includes:

  • Verifying workmanship and adherence to plans

  • Supporting restoration teams in addressing unexpected conditions

  • Collaborating on-site to resolve construction challenges as demolition and rebuild progress

This phase helps ensure quality control and that all work meets regulatory requirements.
