This award-winning, 500,000 sq ft, three-storey facility is Canada’s first free-standing airport terminal to undergo LEED accreditation, delivering world-class passenger comfort while performing over 50% better than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings.
Staying true to the architect’s vision for transparency, connectivity, and abundant natural light, the terminal features more than 1,640 linear feet of north-facing glass. This design presented significant challenges for heating and cooling efficiency - especially on the windswept Canadian prairies and for replicating daylight levels deep within the building’s core.
Working as part of an integrated design team, our team conducted advanced energy modelling and simulation of the glass façade’s thermal performance. These insights guided the incorporation of targeted architectural and mechanical strategies to minimize energy use and support a seamless user experience.
One of the project’s defining innovations was the integration of a high-performance curtain wall system, considered essential to achieving both the architectural vision and energy targets. Combined with carefully designed lighting, HVAC, and control systems, the result is a transparent, sustainable terminal that elevates the travel experience while setting a national benchmark in airport design.
