Located in Whitehorse, Yukon, this 20-unit, multi-family residential building and enclosed parkade presented unique challenges due to the region’s cold climate and remote location. Our team provided mechanical and electrical engineering services, including HVAC, plumbing, lighting, power, fire alarm, and voice data systems for the facility.

To address the harsh environmental conditions, our team employed energy modelling and value engineering to enhance the building’s efficiency. The six-story condominium design achieved a 35% improvement in energy performance compared to a similar building meeting the 2015 National Energy Code for Buildings. Key strategies included heat recovery ventilation, which recovers 86% of waste heat to improve indoor air quality and reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling.

Additionally, 144 rooftop solar panels generating 57.6 kW of renewable electricity were installed, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. Residents were also empowered to reduce electricity demand by selecting between electric ranges or tumble dryers, further minimizing energy consumption.

These innovative solutions helped create an energy-efficient, sustainable building designed to thrive in one of Canada’s most challenging climates.
