The redevelopment and expansion of the St. Boniface Hospital Emergency Department enhances emergency care capacity, improves patient flow, and strengthens long-term healthcare resilience within one of Manitoba’s busiest hospitals. The project supports more efficient, flexible, and future-ready emergency services for the community.
SMS Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, lighting, and energy modelling services, which was delivered within a fully operational hospital environment. The design introduces modern, high-performance healthcare spaces that improve both functionality and adaptability for emergency care delivery.
Key features include pandemic-ready isolation zones with controlled airflow and pressure relationships to support infection control, expanded diagnostic and treatment areas including CT imaging, and upgraded mechanical systems designed for efficiency, reliability, and resilience.
Energy recovery strategies were incorporated to reduce overall system demand and improve operational performance. A remote medium-voltage emergency power system provides robust backup capacity, ensuring continuity of critical services during extended outages. Lighting design supports patient comfort, clarity, and intuitive wayfinding throughout the department.
A key achievement of the project was delivering all construction and system integration while the hospital remained fully operational, including throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The first phase of the redeveloped Emergency Department is now open, marking a significant milestone in strengthening healthcare delivery for the region.
