The RRC Polytech Aviation HVAC Upgrade at the Stevenson Campus is a leading example of practical building electrification and sustainable retrofit design. Originally constructed in the 1950s, the 50,000 sq. ft. facility was modernized to meet current performance standards while supporting RRC Polytech’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Completed in 2025, the project replaced aging rooftop equipment with four new air handling units, three of which are connected to high-efficiency air source heat pumps. This approach enabled the building to achieve approximately 99.5% electrification without requiring costly electrical service upgrades. Strategic design decisions, including retaining a natural gas unit for limited-use areas and implementing a power metering and load shedding system, ensured the solution remained both technically and financially viable.

The upgraded system improves indoor air quality, increases ventilation rates, and enhances maintenance safety by relocating equipment indoors. Additional upgrades, including variable air volume (VAV) systems and advanced monitoring, further optimize performance.

Overall, the project reduces carbon emissions by approximately 121 tonnes annually while positioning the facility for long-term efficiency and resilience.
