Located in Steinbach, MB, Parkhill School is a 62,000 sq. ft. K–4 elementary and childcare facility designed to support a growing community with a high-performance, low-carbon building solution. Completed in Fall 2025, the project was designed to meet LEED Silver objectives and achieve approximately 35% energy savings over the Manitoba Energy Code.

SMS Engineering provided mechanical and electrical design for a fully electric building tailored to Manitoba’s extreme climate, minimizing reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining operational resilience. The HVAC system is centered on an air-to-water heat pump plant with electric boiler backup, enabling efficient performance across wide seasonal temperature swings.

A central VAV air distribution system with dedicated air handling units serves classrooms, gymnasium, and daycare spaces, incorporating high-efficiency energy recovery and demand-controlled ventilation to reduce ventilation energy while maintaining consistent indoor air quality.

Hydronic systems were designed with dual glycol loops and optimized pumping configurations to support low-temperature operation and improve system efficiency. A fully integrated building automation system provides centralized control, monitoring, and scheduling of all major systems.

Electrical systems include high-efficiency LED lighting with occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting, along with specialized lighting in sensory and life-skills spaces. The project was delivered in alignment with Manitoba Hydro NBP 2.0 requirements, supporting long-term building performance, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
