Developed for the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), Michif Manor provides a culturally focused home away from home for Red River Métis families travelling to Winnipeg for medical care.

Located near the Health Sciences Centre campus, the three-storey facility includes 12 residential suites and shared spaces that support families during extended stays, including two commercial kitchens, a community lounge, classroom, fitness area, children’s activity space, laundry facilities, and outdoor gathering areas.

SMS Engineering provided mechanical and electrical engineering, energy modelling, commissioning services, and support for Efficiency Manitoba incentive applications. The building systems were designed to balance energy performance, indoor environmental quality, occupant comfort, and project budget requirements.

A high-efficiency reverse-flow energy recovery ventilator (ERV) supplies fresh outdoor air throughout the facility while recovering energy from exhaust air. Distributed fan coil units with electric heating and DX cooling provide localized temperature control throughout the suites and common areas, while dedicated exhaust serves the commercial kitchens.

Two suites incorporate airflow management and pressurization strategies to provide improved environmental containment for occupants with increased health sensitivities.

Through integrated engineering, energy modelling, and commissioning, SMS helped deliver an efficient, comfortable facility that supports MMF’s vision while qualifying for incentives through Efficiency Manitoba’s Energy Modelling and New Buildings programs.
