This 10-acre flagship exhibit of the reinvented Assiniboine Park Zoo sets the standard for polar bear exhibits worldwide while supporting the Zoo’s sustainable practices.

A customized district geothermal energy system provides clean, renewable energy and enables the Zoo to reduce its ecological footprint. This innovative design includes a combination of water-to-air heat pumps with a variable-flow refrigerant heat pump all connected to a single, district geothermal system made up of a combination of slinky module and horizontal bore hole.

The challenge of keeping the outdoor pools open during Winnipeg’s frigid winters was overcome with an innovative mechanical system that heats the pools without causing damage to the structure or systems.
