The Canada Life Conference Centre renovation required a flexible lighting solution within a technically constrained, windowless basement. The defining architectural feature, a circular ceiling of suspended acoustic slats, introduced challenges for fixture placement, aiming, uniformity, and coordination. The lighting design responds with a cohesive, layered approach that reinforces ceiling geometry while addressing performance, accessibility, and cultural needs.
Suspended cylinder downlights are arranged in a radial pattern within the slats, providing even ambient illumination without disrupting the sculptural ceiling. Wall-wash fixtures, carefully positioned between slats, deliver continuous vertical illumination that enhances brightness, improves visibility for in-person and virtual communication, and reduces the cave-like effect. A circular pendant at the centre defines a ceremonial focal point with soft, low-level light.
An intuitive controls strategy allows seamless transitions between presentations, meetings, ceremonies, and social events. Preset scenes, including radial dimming that emphasizes the centre, offer flexibility while maintaining visual comfort. Adjustable downlights create a dedicated stage zone that minimizes display glare.
Energy-efficient LED sources, combined with zoning and dimming, support sustainability and varied atmospheres. The result is an adaptable, inclusive lighting environment that integrates with the architecture and enhances the user experience.
