This project transformed a former single-tenant cafeteria into a vibrant, public, multi-vendor food hall at Manitoba Hydro’s downtown building. The project combined warmth, architectural character, and functionality, creating a welcoming environment for tenants and visitors alike.

From an engineering standpoint, the project presented several unique challenges. The existing commercial kitchen needed to support multiple tenants with different operational requirements, yet only minimal renovations were feasible. By collaborating with the tenants, shared operational solutions were developed, allowing each vendor to operate efficiently while maintaining an open, flexible layout.

Mechanical, electrical, and lighting systems were carefully integrated into the architectural vision. Linear slot diffusers were incorporated seamlessly between wood slat ceilings, lighting was coordinated to avoid shadows and complement the architectural design, and radiant slab heating and cooling required precise coordination to maintain comfort without disrupting ceiling finishes. These systems were routed and installed to remain largely invisible, ensuring the engineering supported the space’s performance without competing with the design.

Additional challenges included coordinating all building services, including heating, ventilation, lighting, power, and water, around open ceilings, preserving the functionality of sprinklers, and maintaining flexibility for future tenant adjustments. Each decision was carefully balanced to deliver both operational efficiency and visual impact.

Café 360 demonstrates how thoughtful engineering and design collaboration works together to create a space that is functional, comfortable, and visually engaging for everyone who visits.
