Animakee Wa Zhing - Windigo Island Admin Building

Transforming a former school into the Windigo Island Administration Building meant designing modern systems for an off-grid, remote location with year-round access challenges. We provided full mechanical and electrical engineering services tailored to the unique needs of Animakee Wa Zhing #37 First Nation.

Our design achieved net-zero carbon performance by combining a lake-loop geothermal energy system with a 75-kW rooftop solar array. The geothermal system provides reliable, renewable heating and cooling, while solar generation offsets daily electrical loads. To manage power distribution, we incorporated a rotary phase converter - allowing standard three-phase equipment to operate in a single-phase environment.

Energy efficiency was a central consideration in every decision. We implemented advanced controls and insulation strategies to reduce demand, minimize maintenance, and extend system life. These sustainable technologies not only lower operational costs but also ensure the building remains resilient and independent in a location accessible only by water or winter roads.
The result is a high-performance facility that supports health and social services while advancing long-term energy self-sufficiency for the community.
