About

SMS Engineering Ltd. is a well-established, Winnipeg-based consulting mechanical and electrical engineering firm with a Canada-wide outlook. With over 70 staff and 50 years of experience, we have the breadth, width and depth to assist with any project large or small.

We are owned by a third generation of Partners and Principals who are active in day-to-day operations of our firm, and oversee its production, management, and quality control.

We see ourselves as leaders, setting the benchmarks for our market in mechanical and electrical design, project service, and quality of work. We are experienced, knowledgeable and demand excellence of ourselves. We persevere; often going above and beyond to do a proper job.

History

SMS Engineering Limited began operations on January 1, 1965 as a partnership of professional mechanical engineers Ray Scouten, Bill Mitchell, and Dennis Sigurdson under the name Scouten Mitchell Sigurdson & Associates Limited. Experienced in the Toronto and Winnipeg markets at numerous firms, our founders felt they could offer a difference to clients: a firm committed to the utmost in quality, service, and a desire to build long lasting relationships with a commitment to see the job done right.

As the firm grew through acquisitions and undertook larger and larger projects, we became the go-to firm for large complex projects, but still maintained an ability to provide quality for small jobs, and to be there whenever or wherever our clients needed.

In 2000, to better reflect a second generation of ownership, we rebranded to become SMS Engineering Limited.

Today, fifty years after our founding, we still maintain our commitment to quality and service, demanding excellence of ourselves and persevering through to your project's proper completion.

Our Team

Our diverse team offers a wide cross-section of services including feasibility studies, energy modelling, preliminary costing, design alternatives, concept and detailed design and commissioning. We work hard to maintain and develop strong working relationships with all stakeholders in our projects.

Our depth is evident from our work. Our designs benefit from the variety of professional designations of our staff including LEED Accredited Professional, Certified Energy Manager, ASHRAE High Performance Building Design Professional and Certified Lighting Designer.

Our involvement with projects does not stop at occupancy. Our post- occupancy services includes both energy audits and indoor air quality assessments.

Helmut Waedt

Helmut Waedt

P.Eng., Senior Mechanical Engineer, Principal

Helmut enjoys the challenges of developing mechanical systems that provide the environmental conditions necessary for safe, healthy, and comfortable occupancy of a space. Simple system configurations, applications of new technology, sensitivity to aesthetics, and looking back at previous successes all contribute to project specific design solutions. Reliability, efficiency, and cost further influence the equation that has to be solved for each project.
